Cabbage is grown in fields. It can be seeded in a greenhouse for an early ansplants are set out 30 to 50 days after seeding, when the plants are about 15cm high. Before setting out, the seedling is hardened off. This means stressing the young plant so it gets used to the harsher conditions in a field. Cabbage can be seeded directly into a seed bed when the weather is warm enough. Early varieties of cabbage mature about 70 days after transplanting. The main crop matures in 75 to 80 days and storage varieties can take up to 130 days. When cabbage is harvested it is cut by hand near the base with a few outer leaves left for protection.Well we finally had a week of dry weather, and it could not of come at abetter time. We had had the ground phoughed for a week or so. When we got a phone call at 5:00 pm. From Sunnyhurst Nurseries just to let us know that the first of the early cabbage would be arriving in the morning. We plant the cabbage four rows on a 60 ins (152.5cm) butt. They are 14 ins (35.5cm) apart. The plants are grown in peat blocks. Every plant as to be put in the ground by hand. Many thanks to S. S. A. Agricultural Services for getting the staff to us at such short notice.
