The leeks are sown 4 rows on a butt. The butts are 72 ins (180 cm) from centre to centre. The seed is sown 2 ins (5 cm) apart. We have under sown the field with barley which will grow faster than the leeks. This will shelter them from the wind and stop the soil from being blow away. If this were to happen the soil would be like a sand blaster and if would cut off the seedlings at ground level, and they would not grow again. (Picture taken 13 April) |
