It is perhaps the most nutritious and cleansing juice there is. In its natural state, wheat grass is indigestible for humans; luckily, fresh-squeezed organic wheatgrass juice is easily digested. Its nutrients and enzymes--high in chlorophyll, potassium, calcium, and magnesium--are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing an instant boost of energy and ongoing nourishment. It is a potent detoxifier, especially for the liver and gallbladder. 500g makes 24 shots (1tbsp per shot) of an intense 'green' drink - that's a lot! Wheatgrass is available for bulk purchase, we offer wholesale discounts.
WHEATGRASS FRESH CUT IN BAGS Harvesting wheatgrass from a tray immediately before juicing is definitely the best way to get the highest quality nutrients, chlorophyll, and enzymes from tray grown wheatgrass. But many people carry this too far and think that wheatgrass that is falling over and turning yellow is still more nutritious than wheatgrass that has been harvested at the optimal time and stored under refrigeration in a plastic bag. We at Brow Farm we have wheatgrass growing at all times but when we make wheatgrass juice for ourselfs we take the wheatgrass from a bag stored in the refrigerator. Why? It is more convenient - and we know that the juice is still intact within the cell walls until the wheatgrass is put through the juicer to make the juice. Ann Wigmore, in her classic book, The Wheatgrass Book, writes (page 73) that "cut grass can be stored for up to seven days in plastic bags in the refrigerator." Fresh cut wheatgrass, when properly grown on composted soil, will hold its nutritional value quite well under refrigeration. It is the juice itself that is very perishable. Once the juice is pressed from the grass in a juicer, it will begin to go bad in a half hour. If the juice cannot be consumed immediately, it should be discarded. One pound of wheatgrass, about one flat, yields ten ounces of juice. Why We Grow in the Field. Brow Farm Ltd is an organic supplier of culinary herbs, salad greens, and fresh wheatgrass. We grow our produce in soil outside and in greenhouses under lights in winter. This creates conditions where contaminants do not flourish. The plants don't sit in irrigation water; The reason we grow in soil is there is a lot of competitive healthy bacterial operation in the soil which does not allow for build up of any single pathogenic form. Also the temperatures are lower growing with soil. Our greens are grown outdoor in the field giving far more goodness for the plant to take up. Before harvest the greens are air dried using oscillating fans. They are cut about one inch above the soil surface and then immediately cooled to 37 degrees F. The greens are packed dry into plastic display bags. The absence of surface moisture leads to increased shelf life. We should not be grouped with the distinctly different hydroponic sprout industry which has had problems almost exclusively with alfalfa (which we do not grow). The major source of contamination in hydroponic operations has been the seeds, which if they have any bacterial contamination at all, will see rapid growth of the original infection because of the warm, humid conditions needed for hydroponic sprouts. These have been used with exceptional results to boost health and vitality both of people and animals. In 1931, a food scientist called Charles Schnabel was experimenting to find a mixture which would boost chicken health and egg production. Eventually, he found that a mixture of greens containing a large amount of wheat grass boosted health in the chickens very significantly. He said that "even a child can see  the bloom of health in the grass-fed hens". In addition, winter egg production went up by 150% per bird! Research continued, and further remarkable results were noted. For example, cereal grasses were found to improve reproductive ability, and milk production - two markers of good health. Wheat grass and other cereal grasses were used widely as a supplement, until the booming pharmaceutical industry, with its chemical vitamins, grabbed the public's attention. Multi-vitamins became the products of choice - even though their results were not as good as from wheat grass. Science was king! In the 1960's, Ann Wigmore 're-discovered' wheat grass, curing her own 'untreatable' colitis in the process. She gave wheat grass to several sick neighbours - all of whom recovered and were rejuvenated! She went on to champion wheat grass in her own 'Hippocrates Health Institute', treating and curing many people of serious health conditions. THE PROPERTIES OF WHEAT GRASS Wheat grass has many remarkable properties. So many that if you are thinking of the front runners. Wheat grass has only about 10-15 calories per teaspoon. It has no fat or cholesterol. It has nearly a gram of protein per teaspoon, and includes all eight of the essential amino acids, as well as 13 of the remaining 16. The amino acids it doesn't contain are easily made within the body. It contains Vitamins A, B1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 12; C, E and K. A teaspoon of wheat grass contains around 15mg of Calcium, 8mcg Iodine, 3.5mcg Selenium, 870mcg Iron, 62mcg Zinc, and many other minerals. There are four other special components of wheat grass, which make it particularly valuable. These - not in any particular order - are: Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) P4D1Muco-polysaccharides, and Chlorophyll. SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE (SOD) There are three enzymes known to have significant anti-oxidant activity. One of these is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), which is present in wheat grass. It has been found that cancerous cells have a deficiency or a complete lack of SOD. So, if you supplement your diet with wheat grass you will be doing one more thing to help your body to avoid cancerous conditions. Anti-oxidants have the ability to mop up free radicals and so reduce or avoid cell mutation. Mutation is part of the first stage of cancer formation. This is an extremely important factor - because cancer is the biggest killer after heart disease in the Western world. NOT A MIRACLE - BUT PART OF A SENSIBLE APPROACH Of course, this is not to say; 'Eat wheat grass and your cancer will go away' - that is not true. But if I had cancer, I'm sure I'd be eating wheat grass as part of my daily routine. And I'd recommend you take it every day now, for maintenance of good health - and to help avoid any cancerous tendencies. The wheatgrass should, of course, be only a supplement - to a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. It is not a substitute for these things! By the way... ANTI-OXIDANTS Just what are these'anti-oxidants' we hear so much about these days - such as Superoxide Dismutase?During normal metabolism (i.e. activity of the cells) our body produces waste products with active atoms attached - looking for something to combine with. These are 'free radicals'. Free radicals do not stay in existence for long - because they are so active. In other words, they want to combine with something - fast. In fact, unchecked, they can cause havoc - and they produce degenerative changes. These degenerative changes include: Cell mutations - which can lead to cancer, and Aging processes - such as the dreaded wrinkles! And can include illnesses such as:Parkinson's disease. The more anti-oxidants we have in our system, the faster the free radicals can be safely de-activated. So, anti-oxidants are an 'anti-aging' and health-promoting influence. They reduce cell mutations, artery damage, skin wrinkles, and other changes indicative of aging. More on free radicals The cause of Parkinson's disease is not known at present, and there are many theories as to why the loss of nerve cells that characterizes the condition occurs. One theory is the free radical damage in a particular part of the brain may contribute to PD. Free radicals are atoms which can cause damage to cells, impairing the immune system and contributing to conditions such as the aging process, cancer and atherosclerosis. Dopamine-producing cells in a region of the brain known as the substantia nigra appear to be particularly at risk for free radical generation and damage. It is these cells that are lost in Parkinson's. There is also some evidence that oxidative stress may cause or contribute to the condition: for example, people with Parkinson's have been found to have increased levels of iron in the brain, especially in the substantia nigra. Antioxidants (also known themselves as easy electron targets for free radicals. Antioxidants "trap" lone free-radical molecules and make them stable enough to be transported to an enzyme, which combines two stabilized free radicals together to neutralize both. Whether a diet which is rich in antioxidants (found in fruits and vegetables), or antioxidant nutritional supplements such as grass juice, can slow free radical oxidative stress in Parkinsonís patients has yet to be determined. Grass juice (and juice powder supplements) are rich in chlorophyll, amino acids, antioxidants, calcium, iron, vitamins B1, B12 and vitamin C. Wheatgrass and Barley grass are the most common juices, and may help in flushing the lymph system of toxins and cleaning the intestines. Back to the story... The second special component of wheat grass is: P4D1 This is a 'gluco-protein' present in wheat grass, which has three main properties: Firstly, it appears to act in a way similar to anti-oxidants as far as cell mutations are concerned. It stimulates the renewal of RNA and DNA - the creative matter of the body. This means that cell deterioration and mutation will be slowed down or avoided. Therefore, there will probably be benefits from using wheat grass to avoid - or even during - degenerative diseases. Secondly, it appears to reduce inflammation - some say in a more powerful way than cortisone (and without the side-effects, of course). Some remarkable cures have been observed with wheat grass for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis. A third property of P4D1, is that it is also thought to be able to help the body attack cancer cells, by helping to make the walls of the cancerous cells more open to attack by the body's white blood cells. This adds to the anti-cancer These are a combination of complex and simple sugars which appear to stimulate the body's repair mechanisms. Enhancing these mechanisms is important, because the body is constantly repairing and replacing damaged cells. If you can do this better, it means you will 'age' better. Muco-polysaccharides appear to have a particular affinity to help repair damaged heart and artery tissue. Spirulina also contains muco-polysaccharides, by the way; it is these which form the cell walls of spirulina, rather than the much tougher cellulose, which normally forms the cell walls of plants. CHLOROPHYLL Chlorophyll is the remarkable substance to which we all owe our lives. This is because chlorophyll has the ability to capture the sun's energy and lock it into plants in such a way that we can use it to sustain our own lives. Chemically, chlorophyll is almost identical to haemoglobin - the substance which transports oxygen from the Lungs to the tissues of the body. Out of about 50 atoms in the compound, only two are different. The main difference is that at the centre of chlorophyll there is a magnesium ion; whereas haemoglobin has iron in the same place. The action of chlorophyll is so important, that two Nobel prizes were awarded for research on the compound. Chlorophyll's health properties were observed as early as 1950, when Offen Krantz reported the healing of long standing peptic ulcers after the application of chlorophyll. The benefits of chlorophyll fall into three main categories, purifying, anti-inflammatory, and renewal. Purifying: Chlorophyll has an anti-bacterial effect on wounds, and an anti-yeast effect in the digestive tract. It appears to counteract many toxins in the body. Inflammation: It has the effect of reducing inflammation. Thus it can be used to help counteract the effects of arthritis, stomach ulcers, colitis, sore throats, and other inflammatory conditions. Nourishing: It builds blood - after all, it is almost identical to haemoglobin (see above); it helps promote intestinal flora, and assists Liver cleansing. CAUTIONS Wheat grass is a very effective cleansing herb, which means that it may produce cleansing reactions in the body fairly easily. This is basically good! But it may be uncomfortable. So if you are not used to it, start off slowly! The sort of cleansing reactions which may occur include headaches and nausea. Just don't take too much at first, and you will avoid such problems. If you would like to know more about wheat grass, and perhaps to cultivate your own grass at home, an interesting source book is to be found at: http://www.browfarm.co.uk/online_store/wheatgrass_index.htm Ann Wigmore's site - set up by followers of her methods - is at: www.wigmore.org/ As at May 2000 Ann Wigmore's site is at the early stages of construction, but it is interesting to see some information about the famed Ann who, very unfortunately, died when her premises were destroyed by fire. © 2000-2002  Shelley Day, Alternative Healthzine Wheatgrass Juice contains vitamins B, C, E, and carotene (Vitamin A). We need Vitamin A to prevent weak or brittle bones, night blindness, and dry skin. Vitamin A is needed for good eyesight, normal growth and reproduction. Vitamin B is the anti-stress vitamin. The more stress we are under the more of this vitamin is needed. Vitamin B helps the digestive system, the adrenal glands and is essential for normal brain and body formation. Vitamin C is important for the health of the skin, teeth, gums, eyes, muscles and joints. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant, prevents muscle degeneration, sterility, slow healing of wounds and infections and helps the heart. The Vitamin E in Wheatgrass Juice is 10 times more easily assimilated by the body than synthetic Vitamin E.Minerals. Mineral salts are basic to all organic life. The electrical currents of life transfer through Organic minerals (minerals from plants). Organic minerals regulate the elimination and blood-building functions of the body. If you take inorganic minerals (those available in pill form) , you need 10-20 times more , risking an overload, upsetting your internal balance. These minerals are not found in any one single source. That is why we go to great extremes and cost to add minerals to our Genesis Wheatgrass Soil. We have selected minerals from Volcanoes from New Mexico, ancient sea beds from Southeast Texas and Florida, kelp from the North Seas and earthworm castings. We would never grow Wheatgrass in only compost. " If its' not in the soil, it's not in the grass."When someone tells me they grow Wheatgrass in organic compost, my first thought is who's compost mine or yours, or John's or Sam's? All these composts would have a different mineral content. Some minerals could have been leached out during the composting process. Some add peat moss which have virtually no nutrients. The U.S. Senate Document # 264 in 1936 showed that 12 growing seasons would deplete most nutrients from the soil. It concerns me when I hear of someone growing Wheatgrass in only composted Wheatgrass mats. Each cycle of growing Wheatgrass, cutting the Wheatgrass, composting the Wheatgrass mats, with no minerals being added back, the Wheatgrass becomes less and less nutritional, indicated by a Bitter tasting Wheatgrass, thin blades, and a pale green color. Wheatgrass grown in a highly mineralized soil 1. is a good source of calcium. Calcium cannot be used properly if other trace minerals are not present. Plants such as Wheatgrass Juice and other live foods, have the trace minerals present to make the calcium absorbed by the body. Even though spinach, beet greens, and chard have more calcium than Wheatgrass, the presence of oxalic acid binds the calcium making it unusable by the body. 2. is a good source of iron. Iron is needed for red blood formation. Inorganic iron can cause constipation, The iron in Wheatgrass Juice has no side effects. Wheatgrass has an abundance of magnesium, potassium and calcium. These minerals maintain the pH of the blood. Alkaline minerals must neutralize the acids from metabolism in order to maintain healthy bones and teeth and build our immunity against colds and other illnesses. Normal blood contains five grams of sodium per pint. Sodium aids digestion, elimination and regulates the fluids in our cells. Americans eat too much sodium in shape of table salt. Wheatgrass Juice has a safe amount of sodium for even people on a low salt diet. 3. contains all known mineral elements including selenium and zinc.If your Wheatgrass is bitter, not sweet, its not grown in "Genesis" Wheatgrass Soil.Amino Acids A deficiency of just one amino acid can result in allergies, low energy, sluggish digestion, poor resistance to infection, and premature aging. Wheatgrass Juice contains 17 amino acids, lysine, isoleucine, tryptophane, phenylalanine, threonine valine, methionine, alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.MSM MSM is a sulfur bearing molecule found in all living organisms destroyed in processed food. It helps our body use vitamins, help to reduce allergies, helps detoxify the body and increase oxygen, and helps take out inflammation. Our habit of processing everything we eat not only destroys some of the vitamins but totally destroys 100% of the enzymes. Enzymes are also destroyed by drying. Enzymes found in Wheatgrass Juice help detoxify the pollutants inside us and help with digestion. The most important enzymes isolated from Wheatgrass Juice are: 1. cytochrome oxidase, an antioxidant required for proper cell respiration 2. lipase, a fat splitting enzyme 3. protease, a protein digestant 4. amylase, which facilitates starch digestion 5.catalase, which catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen in the blood and tissues. 6. transhydrogenase, an enzyme which aids in keeping the muscle tissue of the heart tone 7. superoxide dismutase (SOD) Clinical trials show that SOD can help protect us from cell damage due to superoxides, infections, aging, radiation, and poisoning from bad air, bad food, and drugs. Wheatgrass is a superior source of SOD.Chlorophyll and Oxygen Wheatgrass is 70% chlorophyll (the green part of the plant). Dr. G.H. Earp Thomas, scientific researcher, considers Wheatgrass chlorophyll "the richest nutritional liquid known to man." Chapter 3 of The Wheatgrass Book by Ann Wigmore ,includes evidence of the blood cleansing and building abilities of chlorophyll, its effect on the circulatory system and oxygen supply, and its role in detoxifying and regenerating the liver.HOW EASY IS IT TO GROW? With a small initial capital outlay, and a little on-going effort in tending your crop, you can grow trays of wheatgrass very easily. It is one of those habits that's easy, once you know how, and you've experimented a few times! There are 2 mediums in which to grow wheatgrass - using soil or hydroponically (using water). Traditionally, wheatgrass, like any plant, is best grown in soil. The nutrient levels are slightly reduced by growing in water, but this method is convenient for those people who cannot make compost, etc. in a garden, and those who just want to keep the growing really simple. You can try both methods, and choose which suits your own circumstances best. Growing instructions are included with the kits, which provide the ingredients for a minimum of 4 trays. ARE WE REALLY SO UNHEALTHY?Two of the most salutary trends in modern nutrition are the malnutrition of affluent society and mass dehydration - both lead to poor health. We are increasingly dependent on refined foods, low quality, mass produced meat, fruit and vegetables. We are subject to massive media exposure of the high sugar drinks and fast food outlets. There is an increasing need to add fertilisers to improve yields from impoverished soil, and to use of growth hormones and antibiotics in the production of meat. Other factors - such as the tight margins demanded by supermarket giants - all conspire to reduce the nutritional value of our foods. The poor quality of our tap water does little to encourage us to drink the recommended daily quota. Our reliance on high energy sugar drinks and stimulants, such as tea and coffee, combine to dehydrate our systems still further. The results can include a reduction in the efficiency of our immune systems, a lowering of reserves through the poor nutrient content of our diet and a propensity to infections . . .IT'S NOT ALL DOOM AND GLOOM, HOWEVER . . .An increase in the public's awareness of these issues has led to an enormous increase in the consumption of organic foods, a suspicion of GMO foods, the on-going call for adequate food labelling and increased use of water purification. Alongside the quantum leaps in our understanding of the importance of living foods and the factors that have led to the deterioration in the quality of our food, come the welcome proliferation of the juice bar, the complementary health clinic, and the local wholefood shop. An organic, freshly prepared juice in a gym or juice bar may cost £3 or more, but an increasing number of people are looking for ways to boost their intake of fresh organic nutrients and of pure water AT HOME. What is it about wheatgrass, that leads it to feature on the menus of fashionable juice bars, to help increasing numbers of people in their fight against cancer, to boost the immune system, and to be an important element in most detox programmes? Steve Meyerowitz, known as Sproutman in the US, describes wheatgrass as "a sunshine transfusion" Dr Ann Wigmore healed her gangrenous legs with it in the 1970's and later ran the Boston marathon; and our own Living Foods expert, Elaine Bruce, who was a student of the late Ann Wigmore, describes it as an essential ingredient of the Living Foods Programme.Click Here for a Printer Friendly Fact Sheet on Wheatgrass & The Wheatgrass Starter Kit SO . . . WHY DRINK WHEATGRASS JUICE?Wheatgrass earned its reputation from people with terminal illnesses, who took it at the eleventh hour after conventional medicine left them with no hope. In the 1970s, Dr Ann Wigmore opened the Hippocrates Health Institute, in Boston, nourishing terminally ill patients back to health with fresh squeezed wheatgrass. Dr Charles F Schnabel (1895 - 1974) chemist and agriculturalist, knew from his work with his farm animals and his research in the laboratory, that wheatgrass boosts nutrition, builds good blood and strengthens immunity. More recently, there are many studies demonstrating the efficacy and nutrition of grass foods, using both clinical evidence and testimonials. In the US there are numerous healing centres, where wheatgrass plays a key role in the diet. There are courses run in the UK by proponents of wheatgrass and raw, living foods. Wheatgrass has long been used like a herbal medicine - for its therapeutic and nutritional properties. Although wheat is the most popular, barley, oats and rye are equally potent. So what's it good for?Blood purification, Liver detoxification, Colon cleansing. As a food Wheatgrass is very nourishing and restorative with a complete range of nutrients. Therapeutically, the fresh juice can be drunk or applied rectally using a enema implant. For disease prevention, you can make powdered drinks, take it in tablet or capsule form, or drink the fresh juice as part of a long term health maintenance programme. For those with an intolerance to gluten, do not be put off . . . The grain metamorphoses completely into a vegetable, with none of the allergic proteins common to the glutenous grains.". . . our food is our medicine and our medicine is our food" - Hippocrates, the father of medicine. It has long been established that the best medicine is a whole, natural food. All known nutrients were found in concentrated form in wheatgrass, including what are now known as phytochemicals. Also anti-oxidants, enzymes, 20 amino acids, vitamins including: folic acid, calcium, zinc, selenium, magnesium, phosphorous, manganese, potassium, and cellular RNA and DNA. Similar natural superfoods containing a broad spectrum of concentrated nutrients are bee pollen, spirulina, chlorella and blue green algae. They all provide the raw materials from which the along with alfalfa and these algae, are the richest sources of chlorophyll on the planet. Green plant cells are the only cells capable of absorbing the energy of the sun. The famous research scientist E. Bircher called chlorophyll "concentrated sunpower - it increases the functions of the heart, improves the vascular system, the intestines, the uterus and the lungs. It raises the basic nitrogen exchange and is therefore a tonic which, considering its stimulating properties cannot be compared with any other". The amount of juice you drink is totally up to you.Steve Meyerowitz says "Grass is non-toxic in any dose, but you may react to the results of its detoxifying power. All grass is a powerful purgative for the liver, and too much can release too many poisons too quickly". EXPERIMENT! Start with small quantities. It can be mixed with other juices or taken neat. Notice the effects of a daily 1oz shot! Remember - it's concentrated sunpower! Rocket fuel! Greenpower! Living food! Whatever it becomes for you . . . have fun! WHEATGRASS FRESH CUT IN BAGS

Fresh wheatgrass is definitely the best way to get the highest quality nutrients, chlorophyll, and enzymes from wheatgrass. But many people carry this too far and think that wheatgrass that is falling over and turning yellow is still more nutritious than wheatgrass that has been harvested at the optimal time and stored under refrigeration for upto a week until it is juiced. At Brow Farm we have wheatgrass growing at all times but when we make wheatgrass juice for ourselfs we take the wheatgrass from a bag stored in the refrigerator. Why? Well It is more convenient - and we know that the juice is still intact within the cell walls until the wheatgrass is put through the juicer to make the juice. Once the juice is pressed from the grass in a juicer, it will begin to go bad within a half hour. If the juice cannot be consumed immediately, it should be discarded.
Why We Grow in the Field.
At Brow Farm we grow salad greens and fresh wheatgrass. We grow our produce in soil outside and in greenhouses under lights in winter to top up the sun that young green shoots need to grow. This creates conditions where contaminants do not flourish. The plants don't sit in irrigation water; The reason we grow in soil is there is a lot of competitive healthy bacterial operation in the soil which does not allow for build up of any single pathogenic form. Also the temperatures are lower growing with soil. Our greens are grown outdoor giving far more goodness for the plant to take up. Before harvest the greens are air dried. They are cut just above the soil surface and then immediately cooled to 37 degrees F. The greens are packed dry into plastic display bags. The absence of surface moisture leads to increased shelf life. Please do not group us with the distinctly different hydroponic sprout industry which has had problems almost exclusively with alfalfa (which we do not grow to sell at this time but are doing tests to find new and safe clean methods so we can offer it in time to our customers).

THE PROPERTIES OF WHEAT GRASS

Wheat grass has many remarkable properties. So many that if you are thinking of taking one herbal supplement with your diet, wheat grass must be one of the front runners.

Wheat grass has only about 10-15 calories per teaspoon. It has no fat or cholesterol. It has nearly a gram of protein per teaspoon,
and includes all eight of the essential amino acids, as well as 13 of the remaining 16.

These - not in any particular order - are:
  • Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)
  • P4D1
  • Muco-polysaccharides, and
  • Chlorophyll.

SUPEROXIDE DISMUTASE (SOD) (an anti-cancer factor)
There are three enzymes known to have significant anti-oxidant activity. One of these is Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), which is present in wheat grass.

It has been found that cancerous cells have a deficiency or a complete lack of SOD. So, if you supplement your diet with wheat grass you will almost certainly be helping your body to avoid, or deal with, cancerous conditions. Anti-oxidants have the ability to mop up free radicals and so reduce or avoid cell mutation. Mutation is part of the first stage of cancer formation.

This is an extremely important factor - because cancer is the biggest killer after heart disease in the Western world.

NOT A MIRACLE - BUT PART OF A SENSIBLE APPROACH
Of course, this is not to say; 'Eat wheat grass and your cancer will go away' - that is not true. But if I had cancer, I'm sure I'd be eating wheat grass as part of my daily routine. And I'd recommend you take it every day now, for maintenance of good health - and to help avoid any cancerous tendencies.

The wheat grass should, of course, be only a supplement - to a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. It is not a substitute for these things!

By the way...
ANTI-OXIDANTS
Just what are these 'anti-oxidants' we hear so much about these days - such as Superoxide Dismutase?

During normal metabolism (i.e. activity of the cells) our body produces waste products with active atoms attached - looking for something to combine with. These are 'free radicals'.

Free radicals do not stay in existence for long - because they are so active. In other words, they want to combine with something - fast. In fact, unchecked, they can cause havoc - and they produce degenerative changes.

These degenerative changes include:
  • Cell mutations - which can lead to cancer, and
  • Aging processes - such as the dreaded wrinkles!
And can include illnesses such as:
  • Parkinson's disease.

The more anti-oxidants we have in our system, the faster the free radicals can be safely de-activated.

So, anti-oxidants are an 'anti-aging' and health-promoting influence. They reduce cell mutations, artery damage, skin wrinkles, and other changes indicative of aging.

More on free radicals
The cause of Parkinson's disease is not known at present, and there are many theories as to why the loss of nerve cells that characterizes the condition occurs.
Antioxidants (also known as free radical scavengers) keep cell damage under control by offering themselves as easy electron targets for free radicals.

The second special component of wheat grass is:

P4D1
This is a 'gluco-protein' present in wheat grass, which has three main properties:
  1. Firstly, it appears to act in a way similar to anti-oxidants as far as cell mutations are concerned. It stimulates the renewal of RNA and DNA - the creative matter of the body. This means that cell deterioration and mutation will be slowed down or avoided. Therefore, there will probably be benefits from using wheat grass to avoid - or even during - degenerative diseases.
  2. Secondly, it appears to reduce inflammation - some say in a more powerful way than cortisone (and without the side-effects, of course). Some remarkable cures have been observed with wheat grass for people with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
  3. A third property of P4D1, is that it is also thought to be able to help the body attack cancer cells, by helping to make the walls of the cancerous cells more open to attack by the body's white blood cells. This adds to the anti-cancer properties of SOD (see above).

MUCO-POLYSACCHARIDES
These are a combination of complex and simple sugars which appear to stimulate the body's repair mechanisms.

CHLOROPHYLL
Chlorophyll is the remarkable substance to which we all owe our lives.

  1. Purifying: Chlorophyll has an anti-bacterial effect on wounds, and an anti-yeast effect in the digestive tract. It appears to counteract many toxins in the body.
  2. Inflammation: It has the effect of reducing inflammation. Thus it can be used to help counteract the effects of arthritis, stomach ulcers, colitis, sore throats, and other inflammatory conditions.
  3. Nourishing: It builds blood - after all, it is almost identical to haemoglobin (see above); it helps promote intestinal flora, and assists Liver cleansing.

CAUTIONS
Wheat grass is a very effective cleansing herb, which means that it may produce cleansing reactions in the body fairly easily. This is basically good! But it may be uncomfortable. So if you are not used to it, start off slowly!

If you would like to cultivate your own grass at home, all you'll need to do this can be found at:

Ann Wigmore's site - set up by followers of her methods - is at:

As at May 2000 Ann Wigmore's site is at the early stages of construction, but it is interesting to see some information about the famed Ann who, very unfortunately, died when her premises were destroyed by fire.
